France first reported more than ten thousand coronavirus infections on Saturday. With 10,561 new cases, the total number of diagnosed infections in the country rises to 373,911.
The previous day record (9,843) was only two days old. The daily average for September is currently at 7,776. In August the daily average was still 3,003.
The number of infections in France is increasing rapidly for several reasons. Not only are more corona tests being conducted, but corona measures in the country are less well enforced.
The daily update from the French Ministry of Health also shows that 2,432 corona patients were hospitalized in the past week. Of that group, 417 are treated in intensive care.
The death toll has risen by 17 to 30,910 in the past 24 hours. France ranks seventh among countries with the most corona deaths. In Europe, only the United Kingdom (41,712) and Italy (35,603) have more people died from COVID-19.
Extra measures due to an increase in infections
The French authorities have decided to take additional measures due to the negative development of the figures. Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Friday that certain groups are eligible for accelerated corona tests.
In addition, the local authorities are given more powers so that they can respond more adequately to local outbreaks if necessary. For example, they may bring forward closing times in the catering industry.
