France Protests Erupt After Teen’s Killing by Police: Latest Updates

France was gripped by new protests on Wednesday night. They were provoked of the killing of a teenager by police in a western suburb of Paris during a car stop.

President Emmanuel Macron described the behavior of the police as “inexcusable”.

In addition to the capital, there were also protests in the countryside. Arsons and violence broke out in Lille, Nantes, Toulouse, Rennes and other cities. An elementary school was set on fire in Bezon.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on Wednesday that 70 people had been arrested overnight, 24 police officers were slightly injuredand about 40 cars were set on fire.

“There is a real atmosphere of tension,” said FRANCE 24’s Mark Owen, who was reporting from Nanterre on Wednesday night.

“It’s a very poor area and a lot of people are very affected by what happened,” Owen said.

“Some say that maybe such incidents are rare, but if you talk to people who are not white in France, they will tell youthat there is a sense that the police are victimizing people who are not white in France,” Owen added.
