France protests against GMOs and Monsanto – 2024-08-07 13:58:11

/ world today news/ Protest actions against genetically modified seeds and dangerous pesticides produced by the American corporation Monsanto (“Monsanto”) took place in Paris and other French cities.

They were part of the International March against Monsanto held worldwide.

In the capital, a column of several thousand demonstrators passed from Republic Square to Stalingrad Square. The banners “Down with GMOs!”, “Monsanto – a predatory criminal corporation”, “We are not guinea pigs for Monsanto” were raised above the participants.

Speakers at the rally denounced the US giant’s drive to dominate the global seed market. They asked the French government and parliament to develop new legislation to more effectively protect public health and pesticide use norms. France is first in Europe and third in the world in the use of these substances.

The participants in the rally also supported the decision of the European Commission to postpone the authorization for the use of the component glyphosate in agriculture. It is part of the Roundup herbicide, produced for years by the Monsanto corporation. According to the demonstrators, this component should be banned. In March 2015, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer issued its opinion that glyphosate is a “possible human carcinogen”.

Beekeepers from different regions of France took an active part in the protest actions, who believe that the mass death of bees that has been observed for several years was caused precisely by Monsanto’s pesticides. /TASS
