“France Presse”: Europe’s military spending has reached a record high since the end of the Cold War

/Pogled.info/ Due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Europe’s military spending in 2022 increased to a record high level for the last three decades since the end of the Cold War, reaching 2.24 trillion US dollars, or 2.2% of global gross domestic product, Agence France-Presse reported on April 24, citing data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

In the same period, Ukraine’s military spending increased sevenfold to $44 billion, equivalent to a third of the country’s GDP, not counting the tens of billions of dollars worth of weapons donated by several Western countries, and those of Russia with 9.2%, the data show.

Europe’s military spending as a whole was $480 billion in 2022, having grown by nearly a third in a decade and will continue to rise over the next decade, the data predicts.

Global military spending declined sharply in the 1990s, but began to increase from the beginning of the 21st century, with US spending accounting for 39% of global spending in 2022, France Presse also commented.
