The Polish team faced the power that won Olympic gold in August in Tokyo. And they bounced off the wall, but it couldn’t be otherwise. Contrary to other teams participating in the Spanish globe championship in Spain, the French team did not experience a personnel revolution in the fall. All this so that the Les Bleues handball players would defend the title in just two and a half years during the Olympics in Paris. The charismatic coach Olivier Krumbholz, who has been the French team selector since 1998 – with a short break in 2014-15 – skillfully introduces new talented players to the team. On the other hand, the trainer Arne Senstad took over the Polish national team only six months before the coronavirus storm and is building the team with a view to promotion to the Olympic tournament in 2024. – We want to be successful in the world championship, but in two years – he said. In fact, only the World Championships in Denmark, Norway and Sweden in 2023 will be part of the qualifications for the Games.
There was no flash
Biało-Czerwony started the match quite well, they were leading 3: 2. However, over time, they began to get lost in the position attack, and the favorites punished most of their mistakes with effective counterattacks. In the 18th minute it was 12: 6 for the French, despite the fact that Adrianna Płaczek was perfectly defended. Unfortunately, on the other side of the pitch, Laura Glauser also had some great parades. The youngest of our goalkeepers, Barbara Zima, had a brief moment of joy when she defended the penalty.
After the change of sides, the Senstad team came closer to four goals 11:15, after hits by the representatives of Eurobud JKS Jarosław – Aleksandra Zimna (a bomb from a distance) and Magda Balsam (from a counterattack).
The Polish women fought like defensively, but the advantage of their opponents was constantly growing. No wonder, since with time the quarterback Allison Pineau, the best handball player in the world of 2009, began to hit.
Cooperation with the wheelers was also not good, but the rivals simply put up a tough defense. The leaders’ goals were missing, incl. captain of Monika Kobylińska, from the second line. Croatian brothers Zoran and Davor Loncar were pointing to the passive game of our team every now and then. There was a constant struggle to lose as low as possible.
Montenegro also no points
In the previous games of group I, the Slovenes lost the victory over the Russians in the last action – a draw was scored 26:26. Montenegro, on the other hand, succumbed to Serbia 25:27, despite leading most of the game. So if the Polish team were to win over the Olympic champions, there would still be hope for our representation to be promoted to the top eight of the tournament. And so Polish women remain without points next to Montenegro, which they will face on Monday. On Saturday, our team still has a clash with Slovenia.
