France has become the first country in the world to enshrine women’s freedom to have an abortion in its constitution. According to foreign media reports such as CNN, the French parliament approved a constitutional amendment on the 4th (local time) specifying women’s freedom to have an abortion.
The French Senate and House of Representatives passed the constitutional amendment on this day with 780 votes in favor and 72 against. To pass a constitutional amendment, more than three-fifths of the votes must be in favor, but on this day, the number of votes in favor was much higher.
However, abortion has been allowed in France since 1975, so this constitutional amendment does not substantially change anything.
After the constitutional amendment was passed, French President Emmanuel Macron said through
French Prime Minister Gabrielle Attal told Ex: “Today France sent a historic message to the world that a woman’s body belongs to her and no one has the right to dispose of it on her behalf.”
On the other hand, the Vatican expressed its opposition before the constitutional amendment vote, saying, “There can be no ‘right’ to take human life.”
France’s decision to enshrine the freedom of abortion in its constitution was influenced by America’s move to roll back abortion rights. In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision that allowed abortion until about 24 weeks of pregnancy.
When the constitutional amendment was passed that day, supporters of abortion rights gathered at the Trocadero Square in Paris cheered, and the city of Paris displayed the message ‘My body, my choice’ on the Eiffel Tower.
