The man was shot twice in St Lazare Street in the city’s 7th arrondissement. The police confirmed that it was an Orthodox clergyman. The police appeared on the scene.
The suspect fled the scene. French The Home Office tweeted about the incident but did not provide any details of what was happening. The French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said that there was a “serious disturbance of public order”.
As he noted, the police action is still ongoing, which is related to the perpetrator’s escape from the crime scene. The entire area around the Greek Orthodox Church parish in Lyon was surrounded by police. In a special announcement, the law enforcement services asked the residents to avoid driving through this part of the city.
According to information provided by French television, the attack took place in the 7th district near a small temple, visited by Orthodox Greeks, and located at the intersection of rue du Pere Chevrier and rue d’Athenes.
A few days ago three people were killed in a knife attack on a church in Nice, southern France. It was – as French President Emmanuel Macron said – “an Islamist terrorist attack”.
