Christmas Day brings with it not entirely hopeful news: the contagions of covid-19 in Europe they continue to rise alarmingly.
Some countries of the Old Continent, for several weeks, have been forced to resume restrictions in open spaces, request the mandatory use of face masks and, in extreme situations, establish a strict confinement like that which, in the Colombian case, has been in place since March from 2020 until mid-May of that same year.
Since November, the growing number of infections has been attributed to the variant omicron, detected for the first time in South Africa, although there had been traces of this strain in other countries before.
This unusual and dangerous wave already ‘break records‘in some countries of the world that, despite significant progress in the vaccination process, have not achieved a sufficient population percentage to prevent massive spread and outbreaks.

France would consider imposing some restrictions to withstand the onslaught of the fifth wave.

France registered, for the first time, more than 100,000 infections daily since the start of the pandemic, almost two years ago. The record of the country’s health authorities indicated the detection of 104,611 positives in the last 24 hours.
The same sources also reported the death of 84 people in the last 24 hours. 122,500 deaths from the virus have been in total in that country since the beginning of the pandemic.
What the figures for France and other countries show is that, despite the spike in infections, the number of deaths is significantly smaller compared to positives detected per day or even per week. This was one of the expected effects with all approved biologics of the anticovid vaccine: to prevent serious cases of infection and, with it, to avoid hospital collapse.
The contagion, more than two years after the detection of the first case in Wuhan, China, continues to be prevented with the established biosafety protocols: hand washing, physical distancing, correct use of the mask – not under the nose or hanging from the chin or the neck— and ventilation in closed spaces.
(We tell you: Italy imposes the use of masks in the street and closes nightclubs by omicron).
France: between regrowth and the third dose
The country is part of the territories in Europe that are immersed in an increase in covid-19 infections. Even more so considering that the negative record of 100,000 infections comes just after another dark mark: on December 23, just the day before Christmas Eve, that country registered a total of 91.608 daily infections. That figure was a record until the one reached this Saturday the 25th.
Since December 18, France has imposed restrictions on travelers from the United Kingdom. Travel from one country to another may only be carried out for essential purposes.

(Also: This is the omicron profile: more contagious, but less serious).
Likewise, three days ago vaccination was approved in children of 5 to 11 years and the booster vaccine was recommended three months after the second dose.
This has been called the ‘fifth wave’ of covid-19. Although at the moment there are no restrictions on the confinement or closure of certain economic sectors – several countries, such as Italy, closed nightclubs and other entertainment venues – President Emmanuel Macron and the health authorities have not ruled out taking measures in the future if the situation worsens even more.
