France Mobilizes for Peace: Join the Movement for Nuclear Disarmament in Dijon

As part of the UN International Days, in particular the Day of PEACE and that for the total elimination of nuclear weapons celebrated on September 21 and 26 respectively, several actions are planned across France. At the initiative of the global network ICAN, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017, a mobilization will be held in Dijon on Saturday September 23, 2023.

The main objective of these actions is to call on France to become an observer at the next meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in New York in November. This is a unique opportunity for nations to engage in the pursuit of world peace.

Since January 2021, thanks to the TIAN, the manufacture, storage and use of nuclear weapons have been illegal. However, nine of the world’s nuclear powers, including France, have not yet signed the treaty, posing a potential risk to world peace.

Furthermore, an appeal is made to citizens regarding banks, which are often linked to financing the production of nuclear weapons. ICAN therefore encourages the public to inform themselves, to question their bank and, if necessary, to change.

The mobilization also extends to the local level. Indeed, 67% of French people want France to ratify the TIAN. Many cities, including Paris and Besançon, have already shown their support for the treaty. Mayors are also mobilizing by signing ICAN’s Cities Appeal. In Dijon, calls are being made to François Rebsamen, mayor of the city, to sign this commitment in favor of peace.

The public meeting in Dijon, which will be held at 6 p.m. at the Grésilles Town Hall, promises to be a moment of discussion and awareness around the urgency of nuclear disarmament. Several experts in the field will speak, including Patrick ZAHND from the ICRC, Catherine HERVIEU, EELV municipal councilor of Dijon, Raphaël PORTEILLA, professor of law at the University of Burgundy, among others.

The gathering also promises to be festive with a buffet, a refreshment bar and a folk ball hosted by “Bal à Trois”. Additional information is available on the ICAN France website.

The actions don’t stop there. Two other events are planned for the coming months, including a monthly Citizen Vigil on September 27 in Dijon and a reflection on the meaning and nuclear weapons on November 15.

With these mobilizations, Dijon and other French cities are asserting themselves as key players in the fight for a world without nuclear weapons.
