France: inflation at 0.8% over one year in July, confirms INSEE

The National Institute of Statistics also confirmed its provisional estimate of a price increase of 0.4% over one month.

Consumer prices in France rose 0.8% over one year in July, Insee confirmed on Friday.

The National Institute of Statistics also confirmed its provisional estimate of a price increase of 0.4% over one month.

Inflation therefore accelerated markedly compared to June, when they only increased by 0.2% year-on-year and 0.1% year-on-month.

In detail, the prices of services rose last month by 0.9% over one month while those of manufactured products remained stable and food prices fell by 0.9%.

Over one year, the “rise in inflation results from a sharp rebound over one year in the prices of manufactured products, in connection with the delay in the summer sales”, notes INSEE in its press release.

“On the other hand, the prices of food and, to a lesser extent, of services and tobacco, are slowing”, still over one year.

Core inflation, which is often used as a leading indicator to predict the price trend in the coming months, stood at 1.4% year on year in July, down from just 0.3% in June, again reported Insee.

Finally, the harmonized consumer price index (HICP), which serves as a basis for comparison at European level, increased by 0.9% over one year and by 0.4% over one month.
