France wants to mobilize a massive police force during New Year’s Eve. According to Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, this is necessary due to a “very high risk” of terrorist attacks.
Darmanin wants to deploy at least 90,000 police officers and gendarmes throughout France, including 6,000 in Paris. The minister also wants to mobilize another 5,000 soldiers.
Darmanin talks to Friday C News a link between the threat and the war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza. According to European security officials, there is an increased risk of attacks from people radicalized by that war.
The highest threat level has been in effect in France since October. Then a teacher was stabbed to death in the northern French town of Arras. President Emmanuel Macron spoke at the time of an act of “barbaric Islamic terrorism”.
But there were more incidents. At the end of October, police in Paris shot a woman who threatened to blow herself up in a metro station.
On December 2, a German tourist was stabbed to death near the Eiffel Tower in the French capital. Two other people were injured
Shortly afterwards, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs tightened travel advice for Dutch people to Paris due to the terrorist threat. The color code changed from green to yellow on December 8. That means travelers have to be on their guard.
