France imposes curfews in major cities against the spread of coronavirus | NOW

A curfew will be introduced in major cities in France, including Paris, for the next four weeks to stem the spread of the corona virus. Anyone who violates the curfew can be fined 135 euros. The number of people allowed at a family gathering is also limited to six.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the measure on Wednesday during an interview on national television. The curfew will begin on Saturday and will be in effect from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. In addition to Paris, the curfew will also start in Marseille, Toulouse and Montpellier, among others.

During curfew, ‘crucial’ travel will continue to be allowed. It is not clear what exactly this includes. Public transport will not be limited.

France reported 22,591 new positive corona tests on Wednesday. It is the third time in six days that more than 20,000 new positive tests have been added daily. “We have to respond,” said Macron. He states that the country has not lost control of the virus, but that the situation is worrisome.

The country declared a state of emergency in March, after the number of hospital admissions had soared.
