France Heat Wave Breaks Records After August 15 – Southern Part Most Affected

In France, the heat record was broken after August 15 for the third day in a row. The average temperature was 27.5 degrees across the country. On Monday the average temperature reached 26.6, on Tuesday it was already 27.1.

It has never been so warm in the country after August 15. Two thirds of France are suffering from a heat wave, reports weather institute Météo France. This is the southernmost part of the country.

The heat comes late in the year and creates many new weather records, for example in the tourist city of Carcassonne. According to Météo France, it was 43.2 degrees on Wednesday. This made it 1.3 degrees warmer than the city’s previous heat record, from August 2003. It will become less warm from Friday.

Weather warnings had been issued for Thursday because of the heat for dozens of the more than one hundred French departments. The number of departments with the highest warning, code red, fell from nineteen to seventeen during the day.

The north of France does not experience extreme heat. There are now warnings for thunderstorms for some northern departments.

The KNMI has never issued code red for heat in the Netherlands.
