The French health services recorded a record number of new coronavirus cases last day, almost 10,000, since the start of the pandemic.
According to data compiled on Thursday evening, 9,843 new infections have been confirmed in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health announced.
The government is meeting on Friday to discuss further measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus. It is currently forbidden to gather large numbers of people and in some cities it is mandatory to wear face masks in public places.
Many doctors worry that intensive care units could be overloaded in the autumn, similar to what happened in March.
Previously, a record number of infections per day was recorded in early September, when the number of infections reached about 9,000. At the beginning of the year, the number of infections reached about 7,500 per day.
The highest number of infections is registered in the region around the capital and the French Riviera.
