French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin on Sunday ordered prefects to step up security measures at Jewish places of worship, as well as Jewish schools, a day after Iran’s unprecedented direct attack on Israel and ahead of Pesach, the Jewish Passover. .
The minister asked the prefects to ensure a “static and visible” presence of law enforcement forces in front of the Jewish community’s places of worship and the buildings considered more “iconic” or “neuralgic”.
As Pesach approaches (April 22-30), he also called on them to pay special “attention” to services and gatherings that “traditionally” gather a lot of people. Furthermore, the Minister of the Interior demanded that there be “systematic static guards at the entrance and exit times of the students” in front of Jewish seminaries as of today.
In addition, Gerald Darmanen called for “regular crossings of police and gendarmerie forces” in front of “specialized shops” of the Jewish community.
He took these decisions because of the “very high level of terrorist threat”, the “maintenance of anti-Semitic actions” in France, as well as the continuation of “tensions at the international level”, above all “Iran’s attack on Israel” on the night of Saturday to Sunday, he explained in his document.
