France expressed its “full support for all decisions” adopted by the summit of leaders of the Economic Community of West African States “ECOWAS” on Niger, including the deployment of the organization’s “standby force” to restore constitutional order.
Paris renewed its “strong condemnation of the ongoing coup attempt in Niger, as well as the detention of President (Mohamed) Bazoum and his family,” the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
At its summit in Abuja, the Economic Community of West African States did not specify any timetable or the number of military personnel who constitute this “reserve force”, while stressing that it still hopes for a peaceful solution to the crisis.
But Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara said Thursday evening upon his return to Abidjan that ECOWAS leaders had given the green light to start the process “as soon as possible”.
