“Currently there are declarations of violence, even hatred, which President Erdogan has made and which we cannot accept,” said Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.
On Wednesday (4/11/2020), Turkey said they would retaliate “as firmly as possible” after France banned the ultra-nationalist group Gray Wolves.
To the radio Europe1, Le Drian said it was not only France that was targeted by Erdogan. But also the solidarity shown by Europe.
“We ask Turkey to immediately let go of such logic,” complained Le Drian as reported by the news agency AFP Thursday (5/11/2020).
The Council of Europe, said Le Drian, has decided to take a stand on Ankara. He advised Ankara to avoid it.
“This means pressure. There is an agenda to impose sanctions,” explained the diplomat who has been foreign minister since 2017.
In the latest tensions, Erdogan called on his citizens to boycott French products in the aftermath of Emmanuel Macron’s remarks.
He was referring to Macron’s speech which refused to bring down the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad post-case of a teacher beheaded last October.
The teacher is named Samuel Paty beheaded by an 18-year-old Chechen teenager, after he showed the cartoon to his students as part of freedom of expression.
