France handed over a new batch of M270 LRU MLRS to Ukraine: how will they help the Ukrainian Armed Forces
The French Ministry of Defense has decided to transfer additional M270 LRU multiple launch rocket systems to Ukraine. The equipment will be transferred within the framework of the “Artillery for Ukraine” coalition, which is headed by the French side.
This was announced by the head of the coalition, General Jean-Michel Guyoton. According to him wordsFrance will provide Ukraine with two additional MLRS LRUs.
Earlier, even before the creation of the coalition (remember that it was created during the last Ramstein in January of this year), the French provided Ukraine with four M270 LRU. So now there will be six of them.
LRU (lance-roquettes unitaire, that is, missile weapon system) is a French version of the American M270 MLRS. The system is equipped with an upgraded EFCS fire control unit, a new navigation system (using GPS) and a new communications system.
Like the American version of the MLRS, the LRU can use high-precision rockets from the GMLRS family. This ensures high accuracy with a firing range of up to 80 km.
Together with those transferred to Ukraine, there are only 57 such MLRS in France. The Ukrainian Armed Forces received the first four systems in the fall of 2022.
As OBOZ.UA reported, the goal of the Artillery for Ukraine coalition is to strengthen military support for Kyiv. According to Jean-Michel Guyoton, “this is a way to further structure the assistance that allied countries provide to Ukraine.” It is the artillery coalition that has two directions, short-term and long-term. First of all, it is necessary to satisfy the priority needs of Ukrainians. We are talking about the provision of ammunition and technical maintenance.
