France correspondent Frank Renout:
“Camps are evicted daily in Calais and the wider area, but these are usually smaller ones of twenty to thirty people. This is the largest camp in the region, with between 1000 and 1500 people.
Although this eviction was apparently already planned, the French will use this as a signal to show that they are actually doing something about the migratory flows to the UK.
France and the UK also have a fishing dispute. Since the UK’s departure from the EU, French fishermen have been required to have a license to fish in UK waters. The French say they don’t get enough permits. It is hinted that these two issues cannot be viewed in isolation. If one gives in in one conflict, it must have consequences for the other conflict.”
