France bids farewell to Jean-Paul Belmondo

A farewell ceremony was held for the late actor Jean-Paul Belmondo at the Saint-German-des-Près church in Paris on Friday. A national tribute was already held on Thursday, in the presence of President Macron.

Belmondo was one of the most popular figures on the silver screen in France and appeared in no fewer than 85 films. He died Monday at his home in Paris at the age of 88. At the beginning of this year, he was already hospitalized because of fatigue.

The farewell ceremony Friday was attended by many great names of French cinema, such as that other great of the film world, Alain Delon.

Thousands of people, including politicians, famous athletes and other French celebrities, also gathered at the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris on Thursday to honor Belmondo. Screens were placed outside on which the tribute with extensive musical tribute could also be seen.

President Emmanuel Macron also paid tribute to the icon of the French film world. Belmondo was considered family, Macron said. “We loved Belmondo because he looked like us,” the president said, praising the movie star for his tenderness and elegance. “Losing you is losing a part of ourselves.”
