Croatian judoka Barbara Matičová won a gold medal in the category up to 70 kilograms at the Olympic Games in Paris on Wednesday. Her father Boris was arrested the following day for kissing one of the volunteers after his daughter’s victory, without her consent.
French prosecutors confirmed the arrest after the victim reported the incident to police. The father of the 29-year-old athlete was investigated for sexual harassment and was summoned for questioning in the seventh arrondissement of Paris, where the judo competition takes place in the Champ-de-Mars field. The perpetrator was taken into custody, from which he was later released.
According to sources close to the Croatian Olympic Committee (HOO), the accusation was dismissed. The police found no evidence to convict him. According to media reports, Matič kissed the volunteer on the mouth, who then reported it to the police. The father of the Croatian judoka defended himself by grabbing the first person standing next to him in the euphoria of victory and kissing him on the cheek.
A similar incident happened about a year ago, when the president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, kissed the player Jennifer Hermos during a trophy presentation at the Women’s World Cup. As a result of this act he resigned and the case was brought to court. They scheduled the hearing for the beginning of 2025.
