The French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, has traveled to the island of Mayotte, between Africa and Madagascar, from where he has announced the end of the granting of French nationality based on the condition of birth on French territory and the tightening for the children of citizens French to try to tackle the migration and security crisis affecting the French overseas archipelago.
For three weeks, roadblocks have been installed by “citizen groups” to protest against insecurity and immigration.
As soon as he got off the plane to “reestablish peace”, Darmanin announced the first “radical” measure, the end of the granting of nationality by birth “in a constitutional reform chosen by the President of the Republic.” «You will no longer be French if you are not the son of French parents. “We are going to reduce the attractiveness of the archipelago,” he explained.
Darmanin is accompanied by the new Overseas Minister, Marie Guévenoux, who has announced an “emergency law for Mayotte” that will be presented for legislative processing “before the summer Council of Ministers.”
“First of all we come to listen to the groups, the citizens, the mayors,” explained Darmanin, who announced that “the Cavani camp will be completely evacuated”, a space where there are hundreds of African asylum seekers.
Foreigners who have been granted asylum “may travel to France” and those who have not obtained it “will have to be under house arrest or in an administrative detention center for immediate expulsion to the African Great Lakes region or to Madagascar.” .
“IRON CURTAIN”
Darmanin has also announced the installation of a maritime “iron curtain” with the collaboration of the Armed Forces and at the request of President Emmanuel Macron to prevent the passage of vessels such as the Kwassas from the Comoros Islands to Mayotte.
There will be “many more media” and “new radars.” “In the coming days you will see a radical change,” promised the minister, who also referred to the debate on political autonomy for the island.
Darmanin has been “against the autonomy” of Mayotte. «Mayotte is a French department. “We cannot accept the whims of those who say they need a special community,” he stressed.
The citizenship legislation for Mayotte was already modified in 2018: it was necessary that one of the two parents of a newborn be French and have regularly resided in France for at least three months to pass citizenship to him.
