France and Ukraine Bilateral Security Agreement: G7 Joint Declaration and Latest Updates

France intends to complete a bilateral agreement with Ukraine on bilateral security commitments by the beginning of 2024, as provided for in the G7 joint declaration.

As European Pravda writes, this was stated by the press secretary of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anne-Claire Legendre, the agency reports Reuters.

According to her, the agreement will outline the framework of long-term humanitarian assistance, support for the reconstruction of Ukraine and military assistance.

“We are working to conclude this agreement with the Ukrainian authorities before the end of the year or early next year,” she said.

A diplomatic source told the agency that the more likely date for completing the agreement between France and Ukraine is early 2024.

Another French diplomatic source told Reuters that the agreement would not contain detailed financial figures or commitments as such because the French government does not want the text of the agreement to go to parliament for approval.

“I think the Ukrainians are logical when they want to see what the US offers them in comparison with other countries. Our proposal does not contain numbers. These are more our goals. We describe what actions we are willing to take in terms of military support, economic support, etc.,” the interlocutor said.

Earlier it was reported that Ukraine and Italy started the first round negotiations on bilateral security commitments, as set out in the G7 joint declaration.

Let us recall that on November 17, Ukraine began negotiations on bilateral security obligations with Germany.

As you know, the G7 countries at the NATO summit in Vilnius agreed framework document on “security assurances” for Ukraine. The leaders agreed not on specific parameters of “security guarantees”, but on their framework; specific bilateral agreements will be signed later. About 30 countries have joined the G7 declaration on long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
