A French court on Tuesday found the French division of Swedish home improvement trader Ikea guilty of creating a sophisticated system to spy on hundreds of workers and jobseekers between 2009 and 2012.
The company’s French unit has been fined € 1 million and former manager Jean-Louis Bailo has been sentenced to two years in prison.
Bailo, who ran the company from 1996 to 2002, was also fined € 50,000 for receiving personal data for fraudulent purposes.
The public prosecutor’s office had demanded that Ikea’s French unit be given a more severe penalty, alleging that the company had carried out illegal mass surveillance.
