Laptop manufacturer Framework will sell an SSD for the Steam Deck. The company has listed a Western Digital drive with a capacity of 2TB in its US online store for $ 300.
Framework writes in a blog post that’s the disk sells in his webshop. The company sells a SN740-M.2 2230 SSD from Western Digital that allows users to store two terabytes of data. Framework refers to an iFixit guide for tips on replacing the drive in the Steam Deck.
It is striking that Framework, of all people, now sells such a disc. Framework is the maker of the eponymous laptop and the company has nothing to do with Valve’s Steam Deck handheld, nor does the Framework Laptop use this particular drive. The repairable laptop contains an M.2 2280 drive. Framework says that M.2 2230 drives are generally much more difficult to obtain because they are much smaller physically and used in fewer devices, especially with such high capacity. “Because we already buy a huge number of Western Digital drives, it’s relatively easy for us to also stock up on the SN740,” the company writes. Such drives as the smaller 2230 are usually only sold by OEMs.
For now, the disc is only sold in the North American and Canadian web shops. In the Dutch and Belgian webshop, users can leave their e-mail address to be notified when the disc is delivered in the Benelux. Framework says it is “still figuring out” whether the drive can be sold in Europe and Australia. Americans pay $300 for the SSD.
