Framework Laptops Achieve Thunderbolt 4 Certification – Computers – News

Framework laptops with a 12th generation Intel processor officially support Thunderbolt 4. The manufacturer will soon release a firmware update for laptops with an Alder Lake processor containing the update for Thunderbolt 4.

According to Framework, some Thunderbolt 4 docks and other peripherals already work with Framework laptops with Intel 11th or 12th generation processors, but do not yet officially support Thunderbolt 4. The picture announces that Thunderbolt 4 support is now official for Framework laptops with a 12th generation Intel CPU. According to the manufacturer, this means laptops should now work with all Thunderbolt 4 equipment and cables.

Users don’t have to buy new components for this. Support will be rolled out soon via a firmware update. Update 3.06 will soon be available for Windows, Linux, and the Chromebook edition. In addition to Thunderbolt 4 support, this update also brings some security patches to Framework laptops and should improve battery life slightly.

Framework writes that the update will also arrive on Framework laptops with an 11th generation Intel processor, but that these laptops will not receive official Thunderbolt 4 support. The manufacturer writes that sadly there are “some problems we can’t fix for that generation”. If you still want Thunderbolt 4 support, you don’t have to buy a new laptop right away. Framework offers a motherboard upgrade with a 12th generation Intel chip. Other parts, such as the Thunderbolt 4 ports, can also be purchased separately and replaced.

Framework came out earlier this year with a modular laptop, which is easy to repair or upgrade. Almost all parts of the laptop are available separately and can be replaced. The manufacturer also undertakes to regularly release updates, for example to provide a laptop with a new processor or a better screen.
