Security and public order are currently no longer guaranteed in the federal capital, argues Viennese FPÖ leader Dominik Nepp. The state police chief dismisses this.
The Vienna FPÖ leader Dominik Nepp is in favor of an army assistance mission in the federal capital. Security and public order are no longer guaranteed, said Nepp on Monday evening in the ORF program “Wien heute” in reference to violent clashes between foreign groups in Vienna. He saw the responsibility for this lying with Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ).
Speaking to the “Kronen Zeitung”, Nepp estimated the number of soldiers he believes will be needed at 100. From the Freedom Party’s perspective, they will be deployed at Reumannplatz, Handelskai, Praterstern, Am Spitz in Floridsdorf and along the U6 subway line.
Vienna police chief rejects assistance mission
State Police President Gerhard Pürstl rejected Nepp’s request on Tuesday: On the one hand, the police have the security situation in the federal capital “completely under control”, but on the other hand, the request by Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) would not be legally possible. In addition, members of the Federal Army lack the necessary training, he said.
“This is probably more due to the election campaign than to a factual discussion of the matter,” said Pürstl in response to the demand made by FPÖ regional party leader Dominik Nepp. What he is demanding is patrolling at neuralgic points, and this requires full police training. This is precisely why, in a current assistance mission, federal army soldiers are only being used in special segments of the security system, such as guarding buildings. (APA/Red.)
