FPÖ – Brückl: PISA study confirms liberal criticism of the teacher shortage | Freedom Parliamentary Club

“This minister has absolutely no idea what things are really like in schools”

Vienna (OTS) “The time for ÖVP Education Minister Polaschek to sugarcoat the unsustainable conditions in our education system must now finally be over. In truth, this minister is completely miscast. Polaschek has not developed a single relevant reform since he took office two years ago, let alone implemented it.” With these words, FPÖ education spokesman NAbg commented today. Hermann Brückl conducted the additional survey to the OECD’s PISA 2022 educational comparison study, according to which more and more young people in Austria have to attend a school where there is a shortage of fully qualified teachers.

“If a third of young people are now affected by a teacher shortage and young people attend schools where, according to school management, they are taught by insufficiently qualified teaching staff, then there is really fire at the roof of our education system. For over a year we have been regularly pointing out to the minister that plugging the gaps with student teachers cannot be a permanent solution. It is and remains a more than untenable situation when, among other things, students without a completed degree are brought into Polaschek’s school classes in all federal states in order to at least be able to guarantee teaching. There are also studies that show that joy and academic progress prevail among young people due to excessive demands because many students are assigned to foreign subjects. A third of these temporary staff actually have to work as class teachers or class leaders,” explained Brückl.

“But instead of introspecting and admitting mistakes, the minister actually appears satisfied with the PISA results in recent interviews. Polaschek has no idea what real life is like in schools. If he isn’t even impressed by PISA, then this fact makes me very thoughtful. Polaschek should therefore reflect on himself during the upcoming Christmas holidays and seriously consider whether he is still ‘the right man in the right place’,” said the FPÖ education spokesman.
