BEIJING – Foxconn’s Zhengzhou, China factory, which produces half of the world’s iPhones, is facing a labor shortage of up to 200,000 people.
Even though it is only a few weeks before the launch of the new iPhone 13 in mid-September, as quoted from the Global Times, Monday (30/8).

Industry observers say this is the biggest gap ever for assembly workers. Since it’s so hard to fill the void in a short amount of time, it’s likely that the new iPhone series could face shipping delays.
Foxconn Deputy General Manager Wang Xue said they needed about 200,000 new workers to meet production needs by the end of September.
This mass recruitment would be indicative of further expansion in production for the new product, industry insiders said.
The Zhengzhou factory currently houses 350,000 assembly workers and can produce up to 500,000 smartphones a day.
In addition to the Zhengzhou factory, factories in South China’s Shenzhen and Southwest China’s Chengdu are also in dire need of workers, especially for the iPhone 13 production line.
“We are told to recruit about 5,000 new workers every week, but it is difficult to fully meet this target,” said a factory manager in Shenzhen.

An industry analyst, Ma Jihua, stated that the shortage of workers at the iPhone factory was mainly due to the Covid-19 outbreak that disrupted supply chains in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam.
