Here’s a look back at some of the incredible moments of 2023.

1. NASA brought the first asteroid samples back to Earth
On September 24, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx landed in Utah.
The OSIRIS-REx mission is to retrieve samples from the 4.5 billion year old asteroid Bennu, which is nearly 63,000 miles away.
The mission was successful when the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft returned to Earth carrying samples from the asteroid. The sample is released and the spacecraft sets off to capture another asteroid.

2. Artemis II crew announces and prepares for 2024 flight
In 2023, the four-person crew of the Artemis II was announced.
Christina H. Koch, Victor Glover, Jeremy Hansen and Reid Wiseman will begin a 10-day journey around the Moon in 2024. They will fly aboard NASA’s Orion space capsule and lift off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a Space System rocket. Outer Launch Space. .

This is the first manned mission to the Moon since the Apollo program more than 50 years ago.
This launch date has not been officially announced, but according to the NASA website, the earliest possible launch will occur in November 2024.

3. The James Webb Space Telescope celebrates its first anniversary
The James Webb Space Telescope celebrated its first birthday on July 12.
On that day, a beautiful image was released showing Sun-like stars being created in space.

“In just one year, the James Webb Space Telescope has changed humanity’s view of the cosmos, peering into clouds of dust and seeing light from the far corners of the universe for the first time. “Every new image is a new discovery, empowering scientists around the world to ask and answer questions they never dreamed possible,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

4. Virgin Galactic takes tourists to space
On August 10, Virgin Galactic sent tourists into space.
On board were 80-year-old former British Olympian Jon Goodwin, health and fitness coach Keisha Schahaff, and daughter Anastatia Mayers.

5. India landed on the Moon and explored much of the uncharted territory
On August 23, India became the fourth country to successfully land on the Moon when Chandrayaan-3 reached the surface.
This landing makes India the first country to land near the South Pole of the Moon, an area of the Moon that has not been widely explored.
6. SpaceX Starship underwent its first two launches
SpaceX’s Starship, the world’s largest rocket, made its first two historic launches in 2023.

Both launches ended in explosions, but the second attempt was more successful because it covered a greater distance.
