Geneva, Apr 21 (EFE).- The number of new confirmed cases and deaths caused by covid-19 maintained its downward curve in the world for the fourth consecutive week, according to data published today in the weekly epidemiological report of the World Health Organization. Health (WHO).

Both indicators fell by twenty-four and twelve percent, respectively.

The global total for the past week has been five million new cases and an additional 18,000 deaths, with declines seen in all regions.

The decrease shown by both indicators is more accentuated, as a result of the comparison with the previous week, when seven million cases and 22,000 deaths had been registered.

With this, the total number of people infected since the pandemic began and who underwent a diagnostic test exceeds 500 million, while deaths have exceeded six million globally.

“These trends should be interpreted with caution as many countries are progressively changing their COVID diagnostic strategies, resulting in lower test numbers and subsequently fewer cases detected,” warns the WHO in its weekly report.

Over the past week, the United States reported the highest number of deaths (3,076), followed by Russia (1,784), Korea (1,671), Germany (1,227) and Italy (994).

The Western Pacific region (includes China), the Middle East, and Europe saw the largest declines in cases (25-28% less) as well as deaths from the infectious disease (23-25% less). EFE
