Poitiers: four young Ukrainian skaters shine at Brian Joubert Poitiers Glace

The club trained by the Poitevin world champion at the Poitiers ice rink welcomes four little prodigies from Ukraine. Olena, Varvara and Radmyr, aged around ten, have just been crowned champions of the Limoges League.

At the stroke of noon, pushing open the door of the Poitiers ice rink, the contrast is striking with the heat wave raging outside. On the ice, under the watchful eye of the coaches Brian Joubert et Cornelia Paquiera dozen young skaters perform tricks.
Among them, four Ukrainian prodigies who, to flee the war in their countryfound refuge in Poitiers with their families. Three daughters, Olena, 11, Olesya and Varvara, 10, plus Radmyr, a 10-year-old blond.

Humanly, they are incredible, there is such solidarity between them…

How do they find themselves Brian Joubert Poitiers Glace ? It’s a Ukrainian skater that I know in France who did the intermediary, says the 2007 world figure skating champion. Varvara and Radmyr were the first to join us. They come fromOdessa. Humanly they are amazing, there is such solidarity between them… And the parents try to integrate as much as possible. At the club, people speak a little Russian, me too, which facilitates exchanges.

“As soon as they make a mistake, it’s a national tragedy”

For almost three months they have been skating twice a day, these little aces reveal a real talentt. At the Ligue Nouvelle-Aquitaine championships in Limoges in May, Olena won the gold medal in the minors N1, Varvara and Radmyr the gold medal in the youngest N2.

Performances that do not surprise their new coach : They are very rigorous. As soon as they make a mistake, it’s a national tragedy. Here, they have the same treatment as the other students but have remained hardworking. We are going to register them for the French championship on return and I hope we can also go to international competitions. We will try to make them progress to go as far as possible.

” Seeing the kids smile brings me a lot of happiness “

Inexhaustible, Brian Joubert feels une grande fiert to be able to help families in difficulty. They would come from another country, it would be the same. Seeing the kids smile brings me a lot of happiness and the other skaters are happy. It’s an experience I don’t regret at all. Afterwards, I don’t know what their desire will be later: to stay in France or to return to Ukraine…

“We have to fend for ourselves”

It’s been three months since the adventure began. It’s a good experience. We do our club work by bringing them our knowledge and our help and we dismissed them. I regret that the associations are not supported. Everything is our loade, we have no help, we have to fend for ourselves. It’s a difficult situation for them, we can’t leave them on the side of the road. The state should do something.
The children are in school Evariste Galois school and in college Ferdinand Clovis Pin Poitiers. Afterwards, they are at home with their mothers, who are all learning French. There are still difficulties in understanding each other but at the club, we have people who speak Russian.

“Another Ukrainian skater could join us”

Until June 24, Varvara, Olena, Olesya and Radmyr will continue to leave daily before enjoying the holidays. Raymonde Joubert anticipates the following season. It is possible that another Ukrainian skater will ask to join us. How could she refuse? They are adorable smiles the president again, about her students from the East.
