The case has been referred to as a mystery in the American media, and the police have been clear that they do not believe there is a connection between the deaths.

The four women Kristin Smith (22), Charity Lynn Perry (24), Bridget Leann Webster (31) and Ashley Real (22) were found dead between February 19 and May 7 this year.

All were found in wooded areas around the city of Portland in the US state of Oregon.

Now the police have turned around: This week they stated that they believe the deaths are still connectedand that they have at least one person in their sights.

– Hope we have him

The police have not said anything about how the four women died, or why they believe the man in question has anything to do with the case. He has not yet been charged with anything.

– I really hope this is the answer. I don’t know, I think I’m still in shock after everything, but I just hope that we have him, says Kristin Smith’s mother Melissa Smitt to the channel KATU-TV.

The daughter was reported missing in December, and was found two months later.

Charity Lynn Perry’s mother, Diana Allen, says news agency AP that she got the news via the media, despite the fact that she is regularly in contact with those investigating the case.

– There is a lot I don’t get to know about, but the investigator and I understand why it is so. We don’t want anything to spoil this investigation, she says.

Allen says she has been told that her daughter died sometime during April.

Was released in 2021

The man the police now believe has something to do with the deaths is already in prison.

He was sentenced for car theft and burglary in 2019, but received a reduced sentence after helping to put out forest fires in the local area in 2021. He should have been released in the summer of 2022 anyway – months before the four women were reported missing.

“I am absolutely horrified on behalf of the victims, their families and everyone else who has been affected by these losses,” said former Oregon Governor Kate Brown in a statement to the AP.

It was she who ensured that the man was released from prison earlier than planned, on the grounds that he posed no risk to the local community.

He was returned to prison in late June of this year, after Multnomah County District Attorney Todd Jackson sent a letter to authorities requesting it.

– Since he was released from custody, he has been involved in criminal activity that is now being investigated in Oregon, he wrote, among other things.
