Four Westzaan prison guards suspended

The four acted as members of the Internal Assistance Team (IBT). This team is available 24 hours a day with specially trained employees and is deployed as soon as a situation is no longer safe for other employees.

The team members may use force if necessary. They are equipped with, among other things, protective clothing, pepper spray, a helmet and baton.

Transfer to isolation cell

On Monday, December 20, the IBT was summoned to transfer a detainee from the psychiatric ward to an isolation cell due to the detainee’s “unpredictable behavior,” a DJI statement said. According to NH News, that several staff members spoke, the detainee is said to have put his hand under the face cap of an IBT’er’s helmet to try to reach out at his eyes.

He also allegedly threatened to bite his fingers. The IBT members would then have slapped the man. According to the employees, the prisoner is ‘no sweetheart’ and he would have already said he would resist before the transfer.

Unruly inmates

After the IBT deployment, the camera images were viewed for evaluation. It was then decided to start an investigation ‘into the incident and the exact role of the four employees’, according to DJI. Pending the results, the employees have been denied access to the facility. The detainee has been transferred to the ward for unruly detainees in Vught.
