How far is reality from your perception? In a hyper-virtual world, in which we live connected 24 hours a day, often mistaking our smartphone for a real friend, will we be able to face the revolution of artificial intelligence? And, above all, our children, our grandchildren, those to whom we entrust the fate of an increasingly broken world, caught between an unprecedented environmental emergency and the return to a past of wars that we hoped had definitively disappeared, will be able to do it. ?
These are the questions at the center of Change the World-Model United Nations 2024, the prestigious international traveling forum for school and university students, which returns to “invade” the United Nations in New York from 5 to 7 April with its jubilant load of aspiring ambassadors. Which this year too will be more than four thousand, coming from 140 countries. With exceptional guests like Valerie Biden, former US alternate representative at sessions of the United Nations General Assembly, Joe Biden’s sister and head of his election campaigns; the ministers Antonio Tajani (Foreign) e Matteo Piantedosi (Internal); Antonio Spadarounder-secretary of the Holy See Dicastery for culture and education; Maurizio MassariPermanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations; Francesco Corvaro, special envoy for Climate Change; Micheal MollerFormer Director General of United Nations Office at Geneva, Secretary- General of the Conference on Disarmament; Enrico TrantinoMayor of Catania; Fabrizio Rindi, Chairman of Kairos Partners SGR and Knight of Labor of the Italian Republic; Boris CollardiMember of the Foundation Board of the International Institute for Management Development (IMD); Marco Tardelli, CWMUN Goodwill Ambassador and 1982 World Football Champion; Adriano Panattaformer Italian tennis player; Maria Latellajournalist and television presenter; Salvatore Carrubba, President of the International Board of the Diplomats Association and former Director of Sun 24 Hours; Myrta Merlinojournalist and television presenter; Giovanni CaccamoItalian singer-songwriter and Ben HarperAmerican artist and singer who needs no further introduction.
“The 14th edition of Change The World in NYC will focus heavily on the theme of the increasingly current and worrying distance between reality and its perception,” he explains Claudio Corbino, president of the Diplomats Association and creator of the event. “I believe that in social and political terms this is one of the main issues that risks undermining the functioning of our democracies. The internet and social media have already generated a lot of confusion in this regard, now the combination of these with AI risks becoming explosive. Voting is the basis of democracies, but if voting is not free then our freedom is at risk. Since the prerequisite for voting is consensus, if the formation of consensus occurs on false presuppositions, voting is no longer truly free. The only solution to all this is study and training. Fake news cannot have its effect if those who receive it are sufficiently trained to understand that it is hoaxes.”
Every year, more than 150 thousand students from all over the world ask to be admitted to the courses held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The objective of theDiplomatic Association is to train the leaders of tomorrow. To date, more than 50,000 students, coming from over 150 countries, have participated in Change The World, together with authoritative experts, ambassadors, former ministers, former heads of state and government, well-known sports champions, artists, officials from the secretariat of the United Nations and the European Union, who discussed issues of international geopolitics with the children. Names like Bill Clinton, Francesco De Gregori, Liliana Segre, Michel Platini, Andrij Šev?enko, Bebe Vio, Carlo Ancelotti and Paolo Rossiare just some of the excellent guests who have dotted the previous editions.
Marco Tardelli, Goodwill Ambassador of CTWMUN, confirms his support for this important initiative which has seen him involved for several years: “For me, this represents a precious opportunity to involve boys and girls in passionate, exciting and current debates, all centered on the values of sport; those same values that inspired me, which I continue to want to pass on to future generations and which should also inspire the actions of politics and institutions”.
The idea of CTWMUN was born in 2000 by Claudio Corbino, a university student in Catania at the time, who felt the need for an education that reflected evolving international dynamics. After discovering the United Nations’ simulation programs, Corbino left for New York with 45 students, laying the foundation for what would become a successful cultural and business model, known as “Diplomats.” This project has grown exponentially, transforming into Change the World-Model United Nations, a global event that emphasizes respect for diversity, democratic values and positive leadership, using the study of the United Nations as a means to understand the complexity of the modern world and promote fundamental values of liberal democracies.
CTWMUN is no longer limited to New York, but also extends to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Rome, Paris and Singapore, involving key figures from national and international politics and relying on prominent personalities to lead the training courses. Now the organization is preparing to launch the Change the World Academy, with the ambition of providing students with the skills needed to thrive in a global world, evidenced by almost 25 years of history and one million registered students. An extraordinary experience that continues its unstoppable evolution and already has another novelty ready: Change the World” Beijing 2025 to continue evolving, aiming to inspire and train future generations of global leaders.
