Four Submarine Cables Damaged in Red Sea by Houthi Attack, Severe Disruptions in Internet Communications

Four submarine communication cables have been damaged in the Red Sea between Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Djibouti in East Africa. reported the Israeli electronic publication “Globes”.
Three months after they began attacking merchant ships, the Houthis followed through on another of their threats. According to the reports, it is about cables of the companies AAE-1, Seacom, EIG and TGN. This leads to severe disruptions in internet communications between Europe and Asia, with the main damage being felt in the Gulf countries and India.

Damage to communications is significant but not critical, as other cables connecting Asia, Africa and Europe pass through the same region and are unaffected. According to estimates, repairing such a large number of submarine cables could take at least eight weeks and is associated with exposure to the risk of attacks by the Yemeni terrorist organization. Telecom companies will be forced to look for companies to carry out the repair work at a likely high risk premium.

EIG (European India Gateway) connects Southern Europe with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, UAE and India. The submarine cable was laid by Tyco’s $700 million unit Alcatel-Lucent and is the first cable to stretch from the UK to India. Shares in EIG are held by a consortium including AT&T, Saudi Telecom, Verizon and India’s Bharat Sanchar.

TGN Atlantic was founded by Tyco International in 2001 and was sold to the Indian company Tata Communications in 2005 for $130 million. The AAE-1 cable, which has also been cut, connects East Asia to Europe via Egypt. The cable, which has a capacity of 40 terabytes per second, connects China to the West through countries belonging to the Sino-Iranian axis, plus Pakistan and Qatar. The Seacom cable connects Europe, Africa and India as well as South Africa.
