Vaccination began at a poultry farm in Puéllaro, north of Pichincha. This province, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Bolívar, Azuay and Imbabura register the 17 outbreaks detected and controlled for avian influenza.

“Vaccination will continue in the provinces where there was positive cases of the virus”, mentioned Andrés Suárez, Vice Minister of Rural Development, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG).

Vaccination requirements

Vaccination will be carried out in farms that meet four requirements:

  • The implementation of biosecurity measures.
  • Registration of their properties with the Phytosanitary and Animal Health Regulation and Control Agency (Agrocalidad).
  • Have a veterinarian responsible for the farm.
  • And negative results to diagnostic tests.

According to Agrocalidad, there is technical support for poultry farmers. In parallel, the authorities say that they are working on the survey of the cadastre, the verification of the biosafety measures and the farm register to be part of the vaccination.

The executive director of Agrocalidad, Patricio Almeida, mentioned that avian influenza is not an isolated event in Ecuador, but is present in the American continent and its propagation is intensified by the migratory birds.

Suárez added that, in order to carry out actions to support the poultry sector, the MAG extended until May 27 the animal health emergency declaration.

Agrocalidad recalled that the vaccine decreases the death rate from 80% to 40%, but it does not prevent contagion to other farms, so it is important to maintain biosecurity measures.
