Four of Italy’s most well-known Catholic medical and academic research institutions signed a scientific research cooperation agreement in the Vatican, and Cardinal Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, was also present. The deal aims to develop “better treatments” and “innovative models” of university education for all.
(Vatican News Network) Four of the most well-known Catholic medical and academic research institutions in Italy signed an agreement on “cooperation in the fields of research, treatment and medical training” at the Holy See State Council on the morning of September 6. The four institutions are: Hospital for Children of the Holy Infant Jesus, Gemelli General Hospital, Gemelli Hospital on the Tiber Island site and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. Cardinal Parolin, Secretary of State for the Holy See, participated in the signing of the agreement.
“The institutions that sign the agreement recognize the qualities of Christian health values and are willing to respond specifically to the needs of Catholic institutions and the current developmental environment in the field of health,” the partnership agreement reads. The agreement also reads, “The agreement responds to the Pope’s appeal when he received the members of the Italian Religious Medical Services Association (Aris) in the Vatican on April 13 this year. The Pope invited them to become ‘a competent, transparent organization capable of Integrating research, innovation with caring for the small and the big picture” and “bringing together skills and resources with the courage to collaborate and build connections, avoiding any competitive mentality’”.
In his speech, Parolin particularly appreciated the agreement. The agreement, he said, “is fully in line with the scope of activity of the Holy See’s Public Legal Persons Commission on Health and Well-being, and in a concrete and pragmatic way well illustrates the spirit of cooperation between the major Catholic health institutions”. He said it was hoped that the clinical and research work would “come to fruition and ensure better care for all”, while “driving effective and innovative models in the field of university education for the benefit of younger generations of university students”.
