Four out of five positive tests due to more contagious delta variant

More than four in five positive corona tests are due to the more contagious delta variant. This is reported by the RIVM. Two weeks ago, two-thirds of the positive tests were still involved.

In June, the RIVM showed another graph in the House of Representatives, from which it was expected that now, in mid-July, a maximum of 65 percent of the positive tests would come from the delta variant. In the most favorable circumstances, that would even be less than a quarter.

“That is because if you work with little data, the uncertainties are still large,” says virologist Chantal Reusken of the RIVM. “But these numbers aren’t unexpected in themselves.”

In the first instance predicted the RIVM that two weeks ago, half of the positive tests would have been caused by the delta variant, but that was already two thirds. According to the agency, this falls within the uncertainty margin.
