Icelandic police arrested four men suspected of planning terrorist attacks. Semi-automatic weapons and thousands of ammunition were also seized in nine locations. Police say the large-scale operation is the first of its kind in Iceland, one of the most peaceful countries in the world.

Those arrested are in their thirties, reports the Icelandic public broadcaster RUV. They are also suspected of large-scale weapon production with 3D printers. Police said at a press conference that Iceland, which is home to some 375,000 people, is safer now that the men have been arrested.

The quartet allegedly had plans for attacks on Icelandic state institutions and civilians. According to the police, the targets include the parliament and the police. Police have not yet said anything about the suspect’s motive.

He investigated any international ties

The four suspects were arrested yesterday in the cities of Kopavogur and Mosfellsbaer, near the capital Reykjavik. According to the police, 50 officers were involved in the operation, whose investigations have been ongoing for weeks.

Two detainees were placed in pre-trial detention. The other two were not disclosed. The police did not want to say whether the four are involved in extremist organizations, reports RUV.

Any links to these organizations are still under investigation. The police contacted foreign authorities about this.
