Four men arrested after a long chase: speeds up to 2 … (Antwerp)

Antwerp, Merksem

After a long chase from Antwerp to West Flanders, four passengers were arrested on Thursday evening. The police had to reach speeds of up to 160 miles per hour to keep up with the road pirate. Why the man fled with his Golf R is unclear: no incriminating elements were reportedly found in the car or in the occupants.

It was a unit of the Antwerp rapid response team that had to deal with a tailgater on the highway late Thursday evening. The team gave way to the impatient driver, who took off like a rocket. “Because of his driving behavior, the team wanted to check the car. That was the start of a long chase, ”said the Antwerp police. It went over the Bredabaan in Merksem, the Kapelsesteenweg, the E19, the Antwerp Ring and so on towards the Kennedy tunnel.

“The vehicle was driving very dangerously and the chasing teams had no choice but to keep enough distance not to run any risks,” police said. “The car with four occupants tore past Linkeroever on the E17 to East Flanders. The rapid response team stayed on their heels and had to reach speeds of sometimes over 260 km / h to be able to follow the Volkswagen Golf. ”

According to the police, it was clear that the driver was taking a lot of risks and endangering other road users. “He kept changing lanes and at one point even turned off his lights. The East Flanders road police took over from the assistance provided by the Antwerp road police. Teams from the nearby local police zones always positioned themselves near the entrances and exits in case the fleeing vehicle took an exit. ”

Harelbeke

Since the vehicle had a French registration, according to the police it could be assumed that they would continue to drive towards France. The road police of West Flanders provided assistance. “At Harelbeke they set up a campaign to stop the car. The driver decided at the very last minute, after half an hour of chase, to take the exit where he eventually got off the track and crashed. ”

The four occupants were not injured and continued their flight on foot, but the rapid response team was able to catch all four of them. An intervention team from Brasschaat, which followed along all this time, supported the SRT in captivating those involved. The suspects were taken by teams from the local police zone to the West Flemish road police.

Why the driver fled is under further investigation. No incriminating elements were found in the vehicle and its occupants. (salt, dvd)
