The first buses with Vindicat members arrived in Groningen on Saturday morning. They were taken care of on a closed site at the Kardinge sports center. One by one the corps members get out of the bus. “The commotion is understandable,” rector Floris Hamann of Vindicat tells De Telegraaf on his return.
The students returned a day earlier than planned. With about fourteen buses, they left in two clusters on Friday.
The students hide in hoodies. At the same time, the atmosphere has been let out, thumbs are being raised. The arrival of the students has been keeping the minds busy for a while, although today there are few scouts. A dozen journalists and some astonished children who go swimming form the welcome committee.
Rector Floris Hamann – he too feels good – understands the consternation about the student journey. He calls the fuss “understandable.” “The advice was: we don’t have to go back. But the dynamics changed from Tuesday evening. Although life in the village continued as usual, we decided to return ourselves. Mainly due to concerns among members and family. Out together, home together. We drove back with a good feeling and are happy with the guidance. ”
Mayor: do not isolate students
The mayor of Groningen, Koen Schuiling, is also present. “Vindicat has followed the advice. Then it will be okay, “he responds. According to him, the call for isolation is unjustified. “That is not necessary. The authorities will now evaluate. All contacts, all names are known. “

“Hygiene measures apply. Follow the GGD recommendations, we say. But tens of thousands of people are on the road again. Risk-free life cannot be guaranteed. The coronavirus is also coming to us, “says the mayor. “Groningen is now one of the few places where it is not. That comes.”
GGD director Jos Rietveld has already spoken to the students. “We gave them advice: if you have any complaints, come out. That has not happened yet. We were in constant contact with them, they were willing. ” The students have received leaflets from the GGD.
The group left last Saturday according to their own words “after consultation with experts”, when there were already several corona infections in the vicinity of the destination. On Tuesday the stricter advice followed to only visit the north of Italy if this is really necessary. So far there are no indications that students are infected.
Football club refuses match
In Groningen there is much anger about the students’ decision to travel despite the situation there. A football team does not want to play against a student club affiliated with Vindicat on Sunday. “I have a wife and a child at home,” said attacking midfielder Samad Faraouni of Groninger Boys.
That decision is “the choice of the club itself,” responds Rector Hamann of Vindicat.
