Four earthquakes in Romania, on the 46th anniversary of the devastating 1977 earthquake

The first was at 03:25, in Gorj, at a depth of 14 km and had a magnitude of 2.3 on the Richter scale. Another earthquake also occurred in this area at 1:00 p.m., of magnitude 2, produced at a depth of 14 km, according to the INFP.

The strongest had a magnitude of 3 on the Richter scale and occurred in Covasna (Vrancea seismic zone), at 08:18, at a depth of 61 km.

The fourth earthquake of this day occurred at 19:16 in Dâmbovița (Făgăraş-Câmpulung seismic zone), at a depth of 26 km and had a magnitude of 2.9.

46 years since the 1977 earthquake

Saturday, at 21:22, marks the 46th anniversary of the 1977 earthquake, in which over 1,500 people died, of which over 1,400 in Bucharest alone, and approximately 11,300 others were injured.

The most serious consequences were recorded in the southern part of the country, especially in the Capital, where 33 buildings and blocks of high or medium height were destroyed, among them being old buildings built in the pre-war period, but also three new buildings (block OD16 in the Militari neighborhood, the block on Ştefan cel Mare-Lizeanu and the Computing Center of the Ministry of Transport). In total, 32,897 homes collapsed or were seriously damaged and 763 industrial units from 23 counties were affected. A 1978 report by the World Bank shows damages worth two billion dollars, of which 70% in Bucharest.

The earthquake was also strongly felt in the neighboring countries (Serbia, Bulgaria, Hungary) but also in other countries from the center and south of Europe, as well as in Russia. In Bulgaria, three blocks of flats were destroyed and more than 120 people died.
