Four dead in Poland – Autumn storm in Europe

The autumn storm that ravaged Europe on Thursday led to four people lost their lives in Poland, and hundreds of thousands of homes in France, Germany and the Czech Republic were without electricity.

Now the storm has calmed down in most places, but Germany has a red warning for wind in the next few days. Red danger warning means that the weather is very dangerous. It reports the British Meteorological Institute, Meteoalarm, on its websites.

– Major injuries and accidents are likely, and in many cases there is danger to life and limbs, the meteorologists write on their websites.

The warning applies to the Harz district in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, and the Bergland mountain range.

The British Meteorological Institute asks the population to be aware of the following dangers:

– Trees can be uprooted and roots can be damaged. Watch out for falling branches, tiles and other debris. Make sure all doors and windows are closed. Secure outdoor objects and stay away from buildings, trees, scaffolding and high voltage power lines. If possible, avoid living outside, writes Meteoalarm.

Yellow danger warning in Norway

16 European countries, including Norway, have yellow danger warning, which is «moderately dangerous weather»

– The weather is potentially dangerous. Be aware if you practice outdoor activities that are exposed to the weather conditions, writes Meteoalarm

Floods and rain are forecast in Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal.

In Stad, Åna Sira, Lindesnes, Frøya, Karmøy, Skomvær and Andenes there is a danger warning for wind.

And there are warnings of snow and ice in the mountains of southern Norway.

Also in Sweden and Finland, moderate danger of snow and ice has been announced in several places.

– Powerful and harmful

Meteorologist at the Meteorological Institute, Anne Solveig Andersen, tells Dagbladet that in the autumn strong low pressures can form which lead to such autumn storms occurring.

– There is a large temperature difference between south and north, and here low pressure can be formed which, among other things, can cause strong and harmful winds, says Andersen.

In France, the danger warning has now expired, but the low pressure still gives a lot of wind in Europe, the meteorologist says.

– The storm was now moving east and here the danger warnings still apply, says the meteorologist.

Major damage

The ravages of the autumn storm in recent days have resulted in major injuries and deaths in several places.

In Wroclaw in western Poland, a van was hit by a strong gust of wind and blown off the road. The driver died. A construction worker died when the wind overturned a wall that was under renovation, while two people died when a tree fell over the car they were sitting in.

In northwestern France, around 250,000 households lost power. In the Czech Republic, the same thing happened to around 270,000 homes, and in the northeastern part of Germany they could count around 50,000.

The weather has also led to major problems for the infrastructure on the continent. Trees have fallen over railway lines in France, Germany, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.
