Four children who crashed a plane in Colombia’s Amazon rainforest on May 1 and went missing were found on Friday. All four are alive, President Gustavo Petro announced.
The children were 13, 9 and 4 years old when the crash occurred, the youngest being 11 months old. Soldiers, firefighters and civil aviation employees searched for them in the jungle for more than a month.
“They are weakened. But let the doctors diagnose them,” Petro told media in Bogota. “They were alone, they made it on their own. It’s an example of extreme survival that will go down in history.”
According to The Washington Post, the children are currently receiving medical care pending their journey to San Jose del Guaviare, the capital of the Guaviare department.
There was already hope that the children were still alive. During the search, property and a partially eaten apple were found in the area days after the crash.
The plane was en route to San Jose del Guaviare in central Colombia when it disappeared from radar. Three adults died in the accident. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
