There was a shipwreck near the island of Chios, Greece. Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi wrote on Twitter that “unfortunately, despite the efforts of the Greek coast guard” died 4 children: they were between 3 and 14 years old. One person is missing and 22 others have been rescued and treated on the ground.
The coast guard of Greece has made it known that among the 22 rescued migrants there are 14 men, 7 women and a child. The boat had sailed from Turkey and would have sunk due to bad weather: none of the people on board had a life jacket. Minister Mitarachi also stated that the Turkish authorities “must do more” to prevent the exploitation of migrants by “criminal gangs”.
Turkish authorities need to do more to prevent the exploitation of criminal gangs. These crossings should not be allowed again. pic.twitter.com/VcFTzpubEw
