Four Catholic churches burned down, police suspect connection to graves found

Four Catholic churches have been burned down in the Canadian province of British Columbia in recent days. The remains of more than two hundred children were found in the same province last month. The police have designated the fires as suspicious and are investigating whether they are related to that find, reports de BBC.

Last Monday, two houses of worship went up in flames in quick succession and today it happened again. The churches were completely destroyed by the fire. No arrests have been made yet.

Last month, a mass grave with the remains of 215 children was found at a former boarding school and a similar discovery followed last week. An Indigenous group said it had discovered 751 unmarked graves on the grounds of a boarding school in the province of Saskatchewan.

These are boarding schools that were run by Catholics in the 19th and 20th centuries and were intended for indigenous children. Between 1863 and 1998, an estimated 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and placed in such schools across Canada.

Indigenous groups want a large national investigation into the practices.
