Technologue.id, Jakarta – Scientists can use a variety of clues to find out what lies beneath the Earth’s surface without actually having to dig. For example, by firing super-fine lasers that are thinner than a human hair at minerals found in beach sand.
This technique has been used in a new study pointing to a four billion year old piece of Earth’s crust the size of Ireland. This piece of crust is close to the territory of Indonesia, precisely under Western Australia and influences the geological evolution of the area for millions of millennia.
This piece of Earth’s crust may provide clues as to how our planet went from being uninhabitable to supporting life.

Science Alert, Sunday (10/7/2022), reported that researchers think the large expanse of the crust will greatly influence rock formation. As old material mixed with new, it first emerged as one of the earliest protocrust formations on the planet and survived several mountain-building events.
“When comparing our findings with existing data, it appears that many regions around the world experienced similar times of early crust formation and preservation,” said PhD student geology and lead author of the study, Maximilian Dröellner, of Curtin University in Australia.
“This represents a significant change in Earth’s evolution about four billion years ago, when meteorite bombardment decreased, the crust stabilized, and life on Earth began to form,” he said.
