Music literally comes from the heart: artists often deal with very personal topics in their songs. Four Swiss musicians reveal their stories.

Story 1: Anna Rossinelli

In “Mother” and “Daddy isn’t home,” the Basel native processes her childhood. “‘Mother’ is about my single mother, who was always there for us and fought for us to be happy.”

On the other hand, there is anger or sadness that her father left her so early. “I’ve written about my father’s death in other songs, but with this song you’ll definitely understand straight away what it’s about.”

Story 2: Adrian Stern

When Stern was a little boy, his family emigrated with him to the USA. The Sterns lived there for about a year and a half. “We had a VW bus in the trendy colors brown and orange,” says Stern. “During the long summer holidays, we took a big trip to the national parks in the western USA.”

His connection to the USA is evident in the song “America”. In it he describes the “moment when you’re ready to leave everything behind, go somewhere and just start over again.”

Story 3: Marc Sway

With “Severina,” Marc Sway made the most beautiful declaration of love ever to his wife. The song was a Valentine’s Day gift and was not actually intended for public release.

“At our wedding, we gave the guests a demo of the song as a souvenir.” As fate would have it, people from the music industry who were there took notice. “When I released my album, they said: ‘Wait a minute, Mr. Sway, there’s not a song on this one…'”

And so the gift became a single that is played throughout Switzerland.

Story 4: Eliane

“Sometimes I have respect for what happens when I perform the song on stage,” says Eliane about her song “For You.” The song is dedicated to her late uncle and manager.

“I thought long and hard about whether I should go public with this, because I don’t really want to go into detail about our story.” With the publication, she now wants to remove the taboo surrounding saying goodbye.
