Robert Łukaszewicz (KSW Stal Rzeszów) took 14th place in the semi-final in Paris and did not advance to the decisive round of the Olympic diving competition from the 10 m tower. The Rzeszów native was the first Pole to take part in the Games after a 32-year break.

OLYMPIC GAMES. WATER JUMPING

Łukaszewicz scored 396.45. He was less than four and a half points short of 12th place – the last place that would qualify him for the final. The best in the semi-final was the Chinese Cao Yuan – 504.00 points.

In the eliminations, where 26 jumpers competed, eighteen of the best advanced to Saturday’s semi-final (Łukaszewicz was eighteenth), and twelve will qualify for the final. Let us recall that Polish diving after 32 years of waiting had its representative in the Olympic competition. The last time at the games (Barcelona 1992) was Grzegorz Kozdrański, currently the coach of the junior team, the twin brother of Andrzej, the coach of the Polish senior team, who is in Paris. Łukaszewicz was not yet born when the last time a representative of Poland in diving, Grzegorz Kozdrański, as a 16-year-old, appeared in Barcelona in 1992. In the eliminations from the springboard he took 32nd place, and from the platform 22nd. The 22-year-old competitor of KSW Stal Rzeszów improved this result in Paris, advancing to the semi-final, and was just a step away from the final competition.

Robert Łukaszewicz has been jumping from a tower for seven years, having previously tried his hand at competitive trampolining.

– Andrzej Kozdrański did the most work with Robert, and he trusted the coach when it was the hardest. At the beginning, Robert’s competition always took place on trampolines and there was a stage when it was known that he was not able to compete on the trampoline with the athletes he had in the competition in Poland. Then the coach said Robert, let’s try from the tower. It was a breakthrough moment in the head of both the coach and, above all, Robert. Very hard work since 2017 is bringing results – says Grzegorz Lesiak, chairman of the technical committee of diving at the Polish Swimming Association.
